Diceware for Bitcoin Wallets

Use physical six-sided dice to create either a valid English BIP39 recovery phrase or a separate Diceware passphrase. All randomness comes from your rolls; the conversion runs locally in your browser.

For real wallet secrets, use the signed download on a disconnected device. Anyone who sees the result may be able to spend the wallet. Never enter an existing seed or passphrase into this page.

Seed phrase: 12 or 24 recovery words selected from the BIP39 list.

Passphrase: an optional, separate secret sometimes called a “25th word.” Every passphrase opens a different wallet.

BIP39 seed phrase

Uses unbiased base-6 conversion and calculates the BIP39 checksum locally.

Diceware passphrase

Every group of five rolls selects one entry from Arnold Reinhold’s original 7,776-entry English Diceware list.

Ten words is the minimum 128-bit-class choice for high-value uses such as Bitcoin. Choose up to 20 words for about 258.5 bits.

Before funding a wallet

  • Confirm that your wallet accepts standard English BIP39 seeds and supports a BIP39 passphrase if you plan to use one. Electrum-native seeds, SLIP39 shares, and vendor-specific backups are different.
  • Recover the wallet on an offline device and compare receiving addresses before depositing a meaningful amount.
  • A forgotten or mistyped passphrase produces another valid wallet; there is no error message and no recovery shortcut.
  • Clearing the page cannot guarantee secure erasure from browser memory. Close the browser and power off the device when finished.

Method and sources

The seed tool converts 50 or 100 base-6 rolls with rejection sampling, then applies the checksum and 2,048-word mapping defined by BIP39. A complete sequence may occasionally be rejected to avoid conversion bias.

The passphrase tool follows Arnold Reinhold’s original Diceware proposal: five physical rolls select one of 7,776 entries. The bundled original English wordlist is PGP-signed by its author. See also Douglas Muth’s implementation.
